Fighting Trafficking
We believe that at NYCUP we can fight trafficking through 3 steps.
1. Education
2. Prayer
3. Partnership
1. Education
Siddharth Kara, abolitionist and Harvard Business graduate implores those wishing to fight slavery to educate themselves on the multiple facets of slavery - labor, debt bondage, sex slavery, and other modes of sexual and labor exploitation - in an effort to disseminate GOOD KNOWLEDGE about the issue so that those we influence are not misinformed. Here are some great videos about the issue of slavery in our world today.
2. Prayer
In Isaiah 61, Jesus states that He came to preach good news to the poor, sight to the blind and freedom to the captives. The New York City Urban Project aims to do just that as we fight to liberate those bound in sex slavery and slave labor in the US and abroad. Slavery is a reality. It pervades every facet of our society and the Gospel compels us not to stand for it. For so long we have been part of the problem and God invites to be part of the solution by not purchasing things made by slave labor, advocating for fair wages and just business practices and participating in the rehabilitation of rescued persons and preventative measures that reduce vulnerability to exploitation.
Jesus was the original abolitionist and His Father the author of freedom. The Gospel sets us free and after educating ourselves we need to submit these things to him in prayer and ask Him how we are to engage with these issues in hope and positive expectation - not despair, apathy and hopelessness.
3. Partnership
Romans 12 says that we are many members but one body and it is particularly true in abolition. There is no one person strong enough or powerful enough to stop the modern-day slave trade. The reality is that every single person is gifted, has a particular purpose and something special to offer the world around them. Regardless of race, age, class, faith, ethnicity, sexual orientation or any other wall that we'll erect separate ourselves from each other, none of these things can separate us from the Love of God (Romans 8:38). Love for those who we see exploited every day and those around the world we may never meet is what will stop trafficking and modern day slavery. Love is what will allow us to see past our differences to attack the problems of the world and cross barriers to truly partner to stop labor and sex slavery.
Because God loves us more than we can comprehend, it must pour out into our neighborhoods and ultimately the world. Finding people that agree with you that slavery should not exist, brainstorming ways to raise funds and volunteer for organizations, and examining your own personal life with people who can keep you accountable and slave-free. We need community, plain and simple.

Every Tuesday, NYCUP sends out an email about volunteer opportunities including those related to fighting human trafficking.
Check out our partnering organizations.
Human-trafficking is a multi-faceted issue and since we are all involved it will take all of us to stop it. Thus we have partnered with organizations that represent the fight against trafficking in all stages.

Slavery only exists because we participate in it. This is an invitation to freedom.
