InterVarsity Christian Fellowship

www.intervarsity.org

InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA® is an evangelical campus mission serving more than 32,000 students and faculty on more than 550 college and university campuses nationwide. Incorporated in 1941, InterVarsity has a rich tradition of campus witness, thoughtful discipleship, and a concern for world missions.

Why InterVarsity?

The New York City Urban Project is just one of the 30 major American cities for ministry opportunity each spring, summer and during the year. Some are just a week long (we call these "plunges"), usually over spring break. Others are two weeks long (we call these "short projects"), starting right after finals. But most are from 5-8 weeks long (these are actual "internships"), usually beginning mid-June. Each of the projects share common elements (e.g., service opportunities, scripture study, worship, etc.) but are different in specific format. They nearly all share a common commitment to teaching certain values, such as exploring issues such as justice, poverty, racism, racial reconciliation, violence, lifestyle, biblical community, and the ministry of the urban church.

In one way or another these projects are all attempting to show you the needs of the urban poor, to let you experience the amazing strength, beauty and resilience of those who are oppressed, and to connect you to individuals, agencies and churches that are making a difference in the city. These projects are designed to help you "seek the shalom of the city." Jer. 29:7

Free to Work

www.free2work.org, www.betterworldshopper.org

Free2Work highlights companies who have been pledged to be Free2Work or have additional certification mechanism in place to eradicate forced labor from their supply chain. We encourage all consumers to use their purchasing power to support companies that have transparency to ensure slave labor is not used anywhere in their supply chain.

Why Free 2 Work?

Buying things that are not made at the expense of those less fortunate is at the least inconvenient and at the worst nearly impossible as much of our economy is built on cheap foreign labor and exploitation; but what happens when you want to purchase coffee that is free of slave labor or clothing with not picked by children? Well, visit these sites and you can see which companies are working not just to make money but to make this world a better place.

Global Xchange

http://globalexchange.org/

We envision a people centered globalization that values the rights of workers and the health of the planet; that prioritizes international collaboration as central to ensuring peace; and that aims to create a local, green economy designed to embrace the diversity of our communities.

In a world where the economics of quantity fuels corporate power and political greed, the elite are reaping profits while working people and the planet are left to pay the price. In response to the global degradation caused by this system of elite globalization, Global Exchange envisions an alternative economics of quality centered upon protecting international human rights to ensure that the cost of globalization does not come at the expense of us all.

New York Faith and Justice

www.nyfaithjustice.org

NY Faith & Justice is a growing movement of churches, organizations, and individuals committed to following Christ, uniting the church and ending poverty in New York through spiritual formation, education and direct advocacy.

NY Faith & Justice envisions a city where New Yorkers and their communities are released from the oppression of poverty and the poverty of riches. We work for a day when rich and poor follow Jesus’ call to live into their need one for the other. We envision the church drawn together and ignited by the vision of Isaiah 61, where practiced justice grows our faith and practiced faith builds a just city. And we envision a New York where resources are shared and just policies are practiced because God’s people are no longer dependent on the dollar – they are oaks of righteousness – dependent on God alone.

Why New York Faith and Justice?

Ending poverty will not just take the church, the government or small groups acting independently but it will be all of these groups working together in concert around a common goal of seeing the poor provided for and those in need having those needs met. Providing students with connections to individuals of all professions living and working post-college but still involved in attempting to reflect the Kingdom of God in their everyday lives is essential in creating a culture that causes lifetime conversion to Christ and turning faith into action.

Nomi Network

www.nominetwork.org

Nomi Network aims to leverage the marketplace,  film, and fashion to eradicate sexual slavery. Nomi Network empowers and protects individuals at-risk for sex trafficking in Cambodia by creating job and educational opportunities that will provide positive alternatives to remaining in, or entering the sex trade.
These job opportunities allow trafficking survivors to become skilled in product production, linking them to Nomi’s design team to develop chic and modern fair-trade products. Consumers then raise awareness for issues of sex trafficking by purchasing these products, with the proceeds supporting Nomi Network’s educational and training initiatives for survivors.

Why Nomi Network?

Rescuing women from sexual slavery is one step towards freedom; but then rehabilitation, safety and a job that brings them a way to make a living changes everything and brings our desire for transformat ion full circle. Students can bring their talent, energy and creativity to Nomi in an effort to create products and expand an operation aimed at not just creating but sustaining freedom for women who need it. Additionally, students learn how to buy products that have not been produced from slave or forced labor. Fighting slavery can be as pracctical as making smart purchases.

Restore NYC

www.restorenyc.org

aRestore aims to provide a home to women escaping the sex industry is the most treasured and primary aspect of our program. When a woman escapes prostitution or trafficking, she is immediately in need of safe housing. In addition to the fundamental provision of food, housing and clothing, Restore's program is unique for four specific reasons: (1) accountability, (2) spiritual guidance, (3) modeling healthy daily living and (4) total reintegration back into society.

Why Restore NYC?

Holistic transformation takes individuals and organizations working in concert at all levels. Restore NYC is on the ground in working to transform the lives of those women who have been rescued. Restore NYC is the first and only Christian rehabilitation organization for rescued trafficked women in New York City.

Slavery Map

www.slaverymap.org

Slavery thrives in the shadows. An estimated 27 million live in bondage today – yet we know about the plight of so few of them. The battle to end slavery begins by revealing it.

This campaign began when the death of Seetha Vemireddy, a 17 year-old bonded slave at a restaurant in Berkeley, CA, came to the attention of professor David Batstone. By learning to recognize forced labor and report it, you can help people like Seetha gain their freedom. SlaveryMap was created for this purpose.

Why Slavery Map?

Slave labor is alive and well but it's hard for us to believe it's in our own backyards, next door, or a couple floors up. This tool will help us to shed light on cases that are happening in our neighborhoods so that we can begin to grasp the scope of this rising issue and serve as fuel for change in legislation, social consciousness and grow our effectiveness to combat this growing problem.

Stop Child Trafficking Now

www.sctnow.org

Stop Child Trafficking Now is a one-of-a-kind campaign that Dr. Laura Lederer, former US State Department Senior Advisor on human trafficking, calls “historic." Stop Child Trafficking Now targets the source of child trafficking: predators who drive the sex industry everywhere in the world, including in your own local communities in NYC. . SCTNow looks to sponsors and donors to help fund highly qualified teams of operatives who build cases and execute missions that bring trafficking to a halt. Not until we stop the predators will we rid the world of trafficking. SCTNow's goal is to put predators behind bars and end the demand.

Why Stop Child Trafficking Now?

After co-sponsoring a screening of Call and Response, a rock-umentary that highlights the atrocity of the modern-day slave trade and the consequent co-sponsoring of a benefit concert with Reggae Artist, Matisyahu hundreds of students wished to take action to join the new abolition movement. By partnering with SCT Now we aim to show students that there are concrete ways to attack the source of the problem and not just the result.

After raising nearly $40,000, building a maternity ward and investing microfinance loans, InterVarsity began to reach out to other campuses and formed a strong contingent raising more than $250,000 through child sponsroships and gifts. Today, Jonathan Walton, the director of the New York City Urban Project serves as an Artist Associate and as a member of their distinguished Speaker's Bureau.

The Veritas Forum

www.veritas.org

Many of our nation's colleges and universities, including Yale, Michigan and Harvard, have included the Latin veritas in their mottos, signifying a pursuit of truth, unattached, it seemed, to anything in particular.

Our name, The Veritas Forum, references our desire to explore the original understanding of veritas. We seek to explore, discuss, engage, inspire, question, and enlarge our view of true life together.

We create forums for the exploration of true life.
We seek to inspire the shapers of tomorrow's culture to connect their hardest questions with the person and story of Jesus Christ.

Why Veritas?

Whatever one's worldview may be, we can agree that there is injustice in the world and we are most capable if we act on our faith to alleviate the suffering of those less fortunate than ourselves. Jonathan Walton, now Director of the New York City Urban Project helped to organize and promote the Veritas Forum at Columbia University and wants to see students that discuss their faith but more importantly invite people live out the values of justice and mercy that so many faith traditions are built upon.
